Kicking Off Courageous Conversations: Angela M. Mitchell's Inspiring Story of Growth

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today! Could you share with our readers a bit about who you are and what you do?

Of course! I’m Angela M. Mitchell, an international bestselling author, speaker, Certified Master Digital Marketing Strategist and Consultant, and the CEO and founder of the Back To Her movement, The Art of Womanhood anthology and docu-series, and this very Courageous Conversations blog series. Whew, what a mouthful! Anyway, I help women reignite their passion, rediscover their purpose, and reinvent themselves and their businesses so they can live the lives they daydream about. I’m super excited to launch this new blog series as an extension of The Art of Womanhood series! I love highlighting and sharing the stories of women who are out there making waves and setting the world on fire with their gifts and talents!

Now we all know that being a woman in business is tough and comes with hard decisions. What’s the most courageous decision you’ve made in your career, business, or personal life, and how did it shape the path you’re on today?

“I researched bipolar disorder and the various treatments available and got busy working on myself. Once I did that, I was able to shift everything else in my life. I think that was the best decision I could have made for my business.”

The most courageous decision I made in my personal life was to completely shift my mindset and change the way I thought about everything in my life! It started with acknowledging and accepting the bipolar diagnosis I received at the end of 2019. After struggling with my mental health for most of my life, I finally decided I wanted and needed a change, so I set out to do that. I researched bipolar disorder and the various treatments available and got busy working on myself. Once I did that, I was able to shift everything else in my life. I think that was the best decision I could have made for my business.

Fear and self-doubt can be crippling and hold us back. Can you share a time when you overcame a major setback or fear in your journey, and what that experience taught you about yourself?

Listen! When I entered this online space in 2020, I was terrified of doing live virtual events and interviews! I was brand new to the scene, just coming out of a four-year-long depression, overweight, uncomfortable in my skin, and my self-confidence was non-existent. But I wanted this so badly! I had been praying, journaling, and manifesting this life, and I wasn’t going to let anything stop me from what God has been calling me to do! So, what did I do? I lost weight—100 pounds to be exact! This journey helped boost my confidence and my ability to show up. I struggled with my weight for most of my adult life, and making the decision to get that under control taught me that I can do anything I want, as long as I change my mind!

As a woman in your field, what’s been the most challenging barrier you’ve faced, and how have you used your strengths to turn that challenge into an opportunity?

“Strategy is my strength, so I used those skills and my feminine superpower to teach other women how to grow using feminine selling and marketing styles.”

Being a woman—specifically, a Black woman—in marketing is challenging in itself! This industry is predominantly white and male-dominated, with methods and tactics focused on that hyper-masculine, bro-style marketing. I had to navigate those murky marketing waters to find the style that aligns with the needs and wants of the women I serve. Strategy is my strength, so I used those skills and my feminine superpower to teach other women how to grow using feminine selling and marketing styles.

How do you define success, and what message do you want to leave for other women striving to create their own version of a fulfilling life and career?

Success looks different for everyone, and we all know that! For me, it’s not just about financial success or having a booming business. Success to me means mastering your thoughts and living in accordance with those thoughts. We are what we think, which means that we are the deciders of the paths that our lives take!

In closing, what advice would you give to women who are hesitant to step out of their comfort zones and pursue their biggest dreams?

Hey Sista, step out and step up to the life you deserve! We only get to do this life thing once, so make it count!
