It’s Not Business as Usual: What Every Female Entrepreneur Should Know

Starting a business is an exhilarating journey full of ups, downs, and challenges. Many people enter entrepreneurship for various reasons, but the goal for most is, or should be, to build financial freedom—not to trade one job for another.

Over the past couple of years, the number of women-owned businesses has surged, growing at twice the rate of those owned by men. Yet, women often face unique challenges in entrepreneurship. One of the biggest? Ourselves.

For example, nearly 25% of women feel unsure about growing their sales and running a successful business. They often doubt their decisions and second-guess themselves. Additionally, women are less likely to seek business funding, and when they do, they ask for significantly less than men, which often means digging deeper into their personal finances. It's time to break this cycle.

Many women believe they must operate in a masculine energy to succeed in business. But that’s not true. Success lies in embracing our strengths as women CEOs.

Many women believe they must operate in a masculine energy to succeed in business. But that’s not true. Success lies in embracing our strengths as women CEOs.

If you're thinking of starting a business, here are some crucial tips:

1. Trust Your Intuition. This is vital! Moving past self-doubt and tuning into your intuition is key to progress. If you’re ignoring your inner voice out of fear, you’re holding yourself back.

  • Recognize that self-doubt and criticism are natural at the start of a business. Acknowledge it—and keep going.

  • Ask yourself: Why do you doubt yourself? What stories are fueling this doubt? Are they based on facts or feelings?

2. Strengthen Your Money Mindset. Many women struggle with asking for money, feeling they don’t deserve it. That thinking has to stop. To reach your potential as a woman entrepreneur, you need to build a healthy relationship with money. A broken money mindset will attract a broken business AND WILL KEEP YOU BROKE!

  • What beliefs do you hold about money?

  • Do you have trouble asking for money or raising your prices? Why?

  • How do you feel about investing in your business and paying yourself consistently?

3. Surround Yourself with the Right People. This is essential! Friends and family may not always get or support your entrepreneurial journey. But you don’t have to do it alone. Seek people who will uplift, support, and walk this path with you. And remember, sometimes the best supporters aren’t the people you’ve known the longest.

  • Join or start a mastermind.

  • Get involved in a business community or group.

  • Connect with a fellow woman entrepreneur for a conversation.

  • Attend business events or conferences.

4. Be Persistent. Entrepreneurship will bring unexpected challenges. Be ready to show up consistently, even during the tough times. If you want to quit, there’s a deeper reason—find it and address it.

  • Push through tough times; showing up, even on challenging days, builds resilience.

  • Don’t take "no" as a final answer.

5. Focus on Benefits Over Features. People buy your expertise and experience, not just products or services. Understand your business's deeper impact.

  • How will your business improve someone’s life?

  • What value do others gain from your business?

  • What transformation does your product or service offer?

Starting a business is a fulfilling journey that challenges you to grow. Don’t let self-doubt or self-criticism stand in your way. The world needs what you have to offer, but you have to step out of your own way to reach success. You might not build a million-dollar business overnight, but you can start with the commitment to show up as your best self every day.
